Heather's Story
"My journey with cancer began 2 years ago when my then 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with a
cancerous tumour in her abdomen. Our world was shattered. I truly believe she is protected by
Guardian angels as even the paediatric surgeon was astounded that we had detected it. It was the
longest month of our lives, but the outcome has been positive, it was successfully removed through
surgery and our regular checkups have remained clear.
I thought that nightmare was over until June this year when my sister, Angela was diagnosed with
stage 3 breast cancer. The helplessness a relative feels is overwhelming and no amount of support
seems sufficient. I first found out about A Few Grey Hairs at our initial appointment at the Donald
Gordon Medical Centre and thought that their fringe option was so novel and innovative. In
anticipation of losing her hair through Chemo, Angela had cut her long hair and so the option of
using her own hair had past.
As a birthday present, I thought I would ask A Few Grey Hairs to use my hair to make Angela a fringe
but when I arrived there and saw their great “hairs with love” product I decided to cut all of mine off
and make her a wig instead. Delia was fantastic and worked like a trojan to get it made in time. I
wrapped up the empty box and wore the wig myself to her party to keep it a surprise. After initially
thinking I had finally gone psychotic wrapping up nothing, she was speechless when I removed the
wig and handed it over.
It has cemented the bond between us and it is more than just a wig, it is “our Hair”. She introduces
me to people I haven’t met as “her Hair” and I have been nicknamed “Hairther”. The personal touch
of the wording on the bands makes it even more special and personal and my favourite is “I am not
this hair, I am not this skin, I am the soul that lives within” by Rami, which for me sums it all up.
We will forever be indebted to Delia and Liz at A Few Grey Hairs for the part they have played in our
journey and we commend them for the passion, compassion and dedicated manner in which they
conduct their business.
Thank you Delia and Liz, we love your “Hairs with Love”!"
